Ideal Length for YouTube Shorts

Video How Long Can YouTube Shorts Be advice has gotten complicated with all the outdated tips and platform changes flying around. Here’s what actually works in 2026.

How Long Can YouTube Shorts Be?

60 seconds max. That’s the limit. Not 15 seconds like some people still think.

The Basics

YouTube Shorts need to be 60 seconds or under. Vertical format (9:16 aspect ratio). That’s pretty much the only hard requirements.

They show up in the Shorts feed on mobile, get pushed algorithmically separate from regular videos. Different discovery system entirely.

Should You Use All 60 Seconds?

Not necessarily. Shorter often performs better. The algorithm cares about watch-through rate – what percentage of viewers finish your video.

A 15-second video that 80% of people watch completely often outperforms a 60-second video where people drop off at 20 seconds.

Match length to content. If you can say it in 20 seconds, don’t stretch it to 60.

What Works

Strong hook in the first 1-2 seconds. Get to the point fast. Don’t waste time on intros.

Loops help – when the ending flows into the beginning, people watch multiple times without realizing. That kills with the algorithm.

Technical Stuff

Film vertical. You can upload horizontal video but it won’t perform as well. Native vertical looks better and fills the screen properly.

Add text on screen for people watching without sound. A lot of Shorts get watched muted.

The 60-Second Strategy

Use the full minute for tutorials, mini-vlogs, or story content where you need the time. Keep it tight for jokes, quick tips, or reaction content.

Test different lengths and check your analytics. Your audience will tell you what works for them.
