YouTube Shorts Guide for Beginners

Video YouTube Shorts: How to Actuall advice has gotten complicated with all the outdated tips and platform changes flying around. Here’s what actually works in 2026.

YouTube Shorts: How to Actually Make Them

Shorts are YouTube’s answer to TikTok. Vertical videos, 60 seconds max. The algorithm pushes them hard right now, so it’s a good time to try.

The Basics

Under 60 seconds. Vertical format (9:16). That’s the whole requirement. Upload anything meeting those specs and it counts as a Short.

Recording in the App

Tap the + icon in YouTube, select “Create a Short.” Camera opens. Hold the button to record. Release to stop.

You can record multiple clips and the app strings them together. Good for cuts and transitions without editing software.

There’s a timer option if you need to step back from the camera. Sets a countdown before recording starts.

Using Your Own Videos

Shot something outside the app? Just upload it normally. Keep it under 60 seconds and vertical. Add #Shorts to the title or description and YouTube recognizes it.

This gives you more editing control. Record in whatever app you want, edit however you want, then upload.

Adding Music

Tap the music icon while creating. YouTube has a library of songs you can use without copyright issues. Pick a song, choose the 15 seconds you want, and it plays over your clip.

Using copyrighted music from outside the library? Your video might get claimed. The Shorts feed seems to be more lenient than regular videos, but it’s still a risk.

Text and Effects

Basic text tools are built in. Tap during editing to add text, pick font and color, position it. You can set when text appears and disappears.

Filters exist too. Nothing fancy but decent for quick adjustments.

What Gets Views

Hook people immediately. First two seconds matter most. If they swipe, the algorithm notices.

Keep it moving. Dead air kills retention. Talk fast, cut tight.

Trends help but aren’t required. Riding a trending sound or topic gets initial reach. Original ideas build actual audiences.

Posting Strategy

Consistency matters more than perfection. Daily Shorts performers often see faster growth than weekly perfectpolished ones.

Test different content types. Watch your analytics to see what works. Double down on winners.

Cross-post your best Shorts to TikTok and Reels. Same content, three platforms, three chances at reach.
